Leftist Editor Drags Vance’s Kids Into Immigration Fight — Conservatives Erupt

Mother Jones editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery is under fire after publicly dragging Vice President J.D. Vance’s children into a political argument over immigration — and earning fierce backlash from across the conservative spectrum.

Jeffery’s controversial comments were posted Tuesday on BlueSky, a left-leaning social media platform popular among progressive elites. She referenced Vance’s children being booed during a recent family visit to Disneyland, claiming it was a “lesson” for them about their father’s politics — and went as far as falsely accusing Vance of sending “other kids… to gulags.”

“People who feel bad for JD Vance’s kids as family gets booed at Disneyland. I get it, but better those kids know now what their father is about,” she wrote. “Other kids are watching their parents get shipped off to gulags.”

The reference was a clear shot at the Trump administration’s stepped-up immigration enforcement and deportation policy, which Jeffery grotesquely likened to authoritarian purges. She then accused Vance of deliberately bringing his children to public events for “optics,” writing, “He probably wants the optics of his family being booed.”

Conservatives didn’t let it slide.

Donald Trump Jr. responded with blunt disbelief: “WTF is wrong with these people,” he posted on X. Republican strategist Andrew Surabian called Jeffery a “soulless ghoul” for using children to make a political point.

“Imagine the type of soulless ghoul you have to be to say this,” Surabian said, noting that Jeffery holds a top position at a mainstream progressive outlet.

Vance’s family was reportedly targeted by angry protesters during a recent hotel stay, with demonstrators waving signs condemning the administration’s immigration policy. At Disneyland, similar anti-Trump sentiment followed them, leading to the public booing incident Jeffery referenced.

But for many, attacking the vice president’s children — especially given their ages — crossed a major line.

Vance’s children — Ewan (8), Vivek (5), and Mirabel (3) — have already endured hostile public scenes. In March, Vance was chased by pro-Ukrainian demonstrators while holding his toddler daughter, who he later said was left “anxious and scared” by the experience.

Jeffery wasn’t alone in her attacks. Far-left activists on BlueSky echoed her sentiments. Former Democrat candidate Shannon Freshour accused Vance of using his kids as “human shields.” Ex-HuffPost reporter Michael Hobbes went further, saying Vance’s children should learn “sooner rather than later” that their father is a “piece of sh*t.”

These comments quickly made the rounds on conservative media, sparking outrage at what many saw as a growing willingness on the left to dehumanize political opponents — even their families.

“It’s despicable to target kids just because you hate their parents’ politics,” one user wrote on X. Others pointed to the pattern: children of conservative leaders being heckled, harassed, or publicly smeared, while the press downplays the abuse.

Vice President Vance has yet to publicly comment on Jeffery’s remarks, but sources close to the administration say the Second Family is “disturbed” by the trend and taking extra steps to protect their children from future incidents.

Meanwhile, Mother Jones has not issued any public statement addressing the backlash or clarifying Jeffery’s role in the outlet’s editorial standards.

As the culture war intensifies ahead of the 2026 midterms, Tuesday’s firestorm is a stark reminder: for some on the far-left, even young children are fair game in the pursuit of political vengeance.
