It’s often been said that once a villain tastes real power, he won’t let go of that feeling. With people like Hitler and Mussolini, the world got to see some stellar examples of that theory. More recently, people like Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong-un have had that taste of power as well. While Saddam was put back in his place, Jong-un has had his power choked because of sanctions against his aggression. As such, his people suffer, and he has incredibly limited resources.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently found himself in the position of a very sudden rise to power that gave him an appetite for victory. As the son of a former Prime Minister, he knew exactly how the game could be played in Canada. COVID was the start of his true grasping of power in Canada. He would have the ability to set national mandates and standards at the flip of the pen in ways that nobody would challenge, simply because he’s the PM.
Every time he passed new pieces of legislation to rob his fellow Canadians of their liberties, you could see pride and happiness on his face. This wasn’t the look of someone proud of doing what was right, it was the same evil smirk you see in legendary cartoons. He knew what he was doing and encouraging provinces to do as well was dead wrong.
So, when the Freedom Convoy was announced, his appearance in the public eye shifted. He appeared nervous for the first time. So nervous that he didn’t stay in Parliament as the convoy rolled into Ontario. When they hit Ottawa, he was long gone from Parliament and in an undisclosed location. Considering the non-confrontational reputation of Canadians, it was a shocker he wouldn’t meet with these truckers or their supporters. However, President Biden had a suggestion; use your political power.
Suddenly, Trudeau instituted the first use of Canada’s 1988 Emergencies Act. Given the number of emergent situations the country has faced since 1988, this was seen as a very serious action by Canadians, and it served as a catalyst for things to come. One of his first actions was to increase the number of Ottawa police patrolling the city. Given the concentration of the protest to a specific area of the city. He tried to provoke them to leave, even going so far as suggesting to his party members that they needed to go counter-protest.
When that failed to get any real change, the Ottawa mayor stepped in. He simply wrote the leadership of the protestors to ask them to move in closer to Parliament. To stop being such a hindrance on the people of Ottawa, and especially the small businesses that were suffering because of their presence. Naturally, the truckers were happy to move within 72 hours.
Yet, that wasn’t enough for Trudeau as he still refused to meet with them, and instead, ordered more police in with horses and full riot gear to get rid of them. Now that they have been moved out, arrested, and had their trucks towed away, the protests have ended. Just not the enforcement of the Freedom Act.
In a public statement, Trudeau explained his mindset. “As I said, the Emergencies Act is not something to undertake lightly, and it’s something that needs to be momentary, temporary, and proportional. That’s why every single day, I am receiving briefings and we are reflecting on how much longer the Emergencies Act needs to be in place. We don’t want to keep it in place a single day longer than necessary… There continue to be real concerns about the coming days, but we will continue to evaluate every single day whether or not it is time and we are able to lift this state of emergency.”
This man’s refusal to allow Canadians to be free is troubling. If it can happen there, it can easily happen here.
